Beyond the parades and flag-waving, it is a moment to honor the sacrifices made by these individuals in defense of freedom and democracy. It’s a day to reflect on the courage displayed in the face of adversity, the camaraderie forged in the crucible of service, and the resilience required to navigate the challenges of military life.

So in order to make sure that conditioning is not a problem Beans and I are incorporating Tabata drills on the slatmill. 20 second sprints separated by 10 second walks focusing on breathing through nose. Raising puppies is a lot of fun, but it is also a

Raising puppies is a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of work. 🐶 Potty training, for example, is a very binary process—meaning the dogs either are or are not allowed to practice going where they should go. 🚽 As a rule of thumb, puppies can be expected to be able to hold their bladder for about an hour relative to every month that they have been alive.

For example, a 4-month-old puppy should be able to go 4 hours between potty breaks as long as it isn’t allowed to gorge water. 💦 This doesn’t mean you should restrict water, only that you should monitor its consumption so you can better predict the puppy’s need to go. ⏰ This is true no matter how much or how little time you have available for these breaks.

When I raise a puppy, I have alarms going off all day and all night. It’s exhausting. 😅 But it’s the only way to do it right. If you hire a trainer to help you with potty training, just remember that they will help your puppy get to a predictable routine. But it’s still up to you to find the time to accommodate the puppy’s needs. 🕰️

The relationship dynamic between you and your dog significantly influences their behavior, surpassing factors like background, breed tendencies, or personal preferences. So instead of attributing your dog's bad habits to past trauma or likes and dislikes, ask yourself: have I earned this dog's respect, or am I relying on bribery and good intentions?

Respect plays a crucial role in the social structure of pack animals, especially predators like dogs. Unlike many other group-based predatory animals, canids thrive in packs due to a nuanced understanding of social hierarchy. It's not solely about size and strength; competence in leadership and trustworthiness are paramount.

In my experience, individuals facing training plateaus often hold strong opinions based on emotions rather than logical reasoning. It’s important to recognize that every dog is unique, and there's no one-size-fits-all tool, trick, or method. What truly matters when it comes to shaping behavior is teaching the animal its role within the pack and setting clear expectations. For example: my personal dogs can be stubborn and dominant, but at the end of the day I get to decide who exists in our group and out in the world because I've earned their trust and respect.

No Tools, No Problem

Clear communication and a healthy relationship will do more for the out than any tool. Don’t get me wrong, training tools like the e-collar can absolutely help refine many behaviors. But if your dog doesn’t respect you enough to care about what you want without you having to use stim then the practice field will be only place you can show your dog.

This is true even if you are in the low-stim/no-conflict camp when it comes to e-collars. A good trainer takes the time necessary to teach but ultimately the dog will need to be held accountable to your commands. This is where the relationship will truly be tested.

Respect is key 🔑 no matter what tools or methods you use.

In the realm of canine education, diving into the technical nuances demands a significant investment of time and, quite possibly, money to avoid the hassle of undoing misguided practices. Above is a montage of the past 8 months of daily work that I’ve invested in my dog Beans 🫘. And we are still very far from done with this one “simple” trick.

I’m regularly bombarded with queries from folks wanting to teach their dogs advanced behaviors. Oddly enough, these are often the same individuals who balk at the idea of shelling out for professional training. It’s a peculiar paradox – they acknowledge the challenge, but seem to think it’s a walk in the park, assuming they’re just a trick or tip away from success.

Let’s talk about the four stages of learning. We start off in blissful ignorance – unconscious incompetence. Research catapults us into the harsh light of conscious incompetence, where we know what we don’t know, launching a relentless pursuit of missing puzzle pieces. As understanding dawns, we enter conscious competence – grasping it but needing energy and focus to stay on track. For the tenacious few who stick it out, often transitioning to educators themselves, we hit the sweet spot of unconscious competence. Muscle memory takes over, making actions second nature.

Now, when you hire a trainer – a real pro, not the cheapest bidder – you’re not just buying their time. You’re compensating them for the sweat, tears, and hours poured into mastering their craft. It’s about getting someone who’s been through the trenches, offering you something that can genuinely shake things up. Opting for the budget choice might seem tempting, but real value lies in the expertise honed through dedicated skill development.

This will be the last decoy development course of the year for me. Mark your calendars for December 11-13 if you live in or can commute to Putnam County, FL and are in need of a decoy certification before closing out 2023.

This 3 day course will cover the fundamentals of decoy work as they relate to high risk deployment scenario training as well as troubleshooting common issues related to both street deployment and certification preparedness for the modern K-9 team.
